About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Backend Developer with expertise in Ruby and Elixir to join our dynamic team remotely from London. This role is pivotal in supporting a major modernization initiative for a prominent technology business. You will be responsible for leading a large-scale refactoring project across a complex, multi-service platform, ensuring systems are optimized for performance, scalability, and maintainability. The ideal candidate is someone who thrives on untangling legacy code, redesigning architectures, and implementing pragmatic technical solutions that significantly improve system health and efficiency.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Backend Developer with a focus on Ruby and Elixir programming languages.
• Strong understanding of Elixir, including OTP, GenServers, and Phoenix framework.
• Extensive experience with Ruby, demonstrating deep knowledge of its ecosystem and best practices.
• Solid background in designing, implementing, and optimizing database schemas and performance.
• Experience in refactoring legacy codebases and modernizing architecture.
• Familiarity with messaging and event-driven architecture.
• Ability to define and enforce engineering standards and maintainability practices.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Strong communication skills and experience mentoring or supporting engineering teams.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end refactoring efforts across multiple backend technology stacks, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations.
• Redesign and modernize messaging and event architecture to improve system responsiveness and scalability.
• Enhance database performance, reliability, and schema design to support increased load and data integrity.
• Identify and reduce technical debt while maintaining a focus on delivering business value.
• Define, implement, and promote engineering standards, best practices, and maintainability guidelines across teams.
• Support and mentor engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers, frontend developers, and DevOps engineers to deliver integrated solutions.
• Participate in code reviews, technical planning, and documentation to ensure quality and consistency.
• Stay updated with industry trends and emerging technologies to recommend innovative solutions.
