About the role

Location: Remote (U.S. only)
Duration: 4 months (with possible extension)
Hours: ~40 hours/week

Overview
We are seeking an experienced Elixir / Phoenix Developer to design, build, and maintain scalable, high-performance backend systems. This role focuses on developing real-time, distributed applications using Elixir and the Phoenix Framework, with an emphasis on reliability, concurrency, and clean architecture. The ideal candidate has strong functional programming experience, thrives in a collaborative environment, and is passionate about building resilient systems that power modern web applications.

Key Responsibilities
Application Development
Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Elixir and Phoenix
Build and support RESTful APIs and real-time features (e.g., WebSockets, Phoenix Channels)
Develop scalable, fault-tolerant systems leveraging the Erlang VM (BEAM)
System Architecture
Design and architect distributed systems with high availability and performance
Optimize applications for concurrency and low-latency processing
Model and manage data across relational (e.g., PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases

Qualifications
Proven experience building backend systems with Elixir and Phoenix
Strong understanding of functional programming concepts
Experience developing real-time or distributed systems
Solid knowledge of RESTful API design and web services
Experience working with relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred); NoSQL experience is a plus
Familiarity with concurrency, fault tolerance, and scalable system design
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment
Nice to Have
Experience with Phoenix LiveView
Background in high-traffic or real-time applications
Exposure to cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
